The king’s legal advisors have been put in a tight spot. The king has just asked, ″According to law, what must be done to Queen Vashti . . . She has not obeyed the command of King Xerxes that the eunuchs have taken to her″ (Esther 1:15). Memukan, one of the king’s advisors, doesn’t answer the question directly.

In Hans Christian Andersen’s tale, ″The Emperor’s New Clothes,″ a vain ruler parades before his subjects. His clothes are supposedly made from a fabric invisible to the stupid and incompetent, but he is actually wearing nothing at all. Looking past all the pomp and grandeur of his position, what kind of man is King Xerxes?
As our narrative opens, we are introduced to King Xerxes. He is someone who could probably star in his own reality TV show, ″Lifestyles of the Rich and Powerful″. As we read in verse 1, he rules over a vast Persian Empire stretching from India to Sudan and spanning three continents-Asia, Africa, and Europe.
