Paul now moves from thanksgiving to petition. Paul always prays for the Colossians, asking “God to fill [them] with the knowledge of his will”.
Paul is thankful to God that His powerful Word of Truth has borne the fruit of faith and love in the lives of the Christians in Colossae. And not just in their lives, but also “the gospel is bearing fruit and growing throughout the whole world”.
Welcome to Colossians, Paul’s word of encouragement to the “holy and faithful” in Colossae. Having introduced himself, Paul immediately reminds the Colossians of how he prays for them. Paul’s prayer is astonishing: “We always thank God”.
