4 Reasons God’s Love is the Best Foundation for Your Life
Written by Nicole Rungo, Mozambique
We’re all drawn to building our lives on the foundations of money, success, and recognition.
I will confess that I, too, was like that—wanting to be recognised for doing amazing things and to have wealth that would place me somewhere near the top of the social strata.
But thanks to the Lord, my eyes have been opened to see that what I had been looking for were attractive yet unstable foundations for my life.
Sure, sometimes, my heart aches to go back to these alluring pursuits, and I need a daily reminder that the lure of sin is seductive and powerful—and often doesn’t deliver on the pleasure and satisfaction it promises.
But God is good and faithful, protecting and loving. Every time I find myself drawn by these things, He continues to renew my mind so that I can remember the true foundation that will be infinitely firm and worth building on—Jesus Himself.
Here are a few reasons why I’ve found that God’s love is the best foundation for my life.
1. His love is everlasting
For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life. – John 3:16
God gave His only Son to die for our sins and give us eternal life, fully knowing that some wouldn’t appreciate the sacrifice—would mock it, even. But He died so that we could live, and enjoy a restored relationship with the Father, and an eternal life with Him.
What’s more, as Romans 8:32 reminds us:
He who did not spare his own Son, but gave him up for us all—how will he not also, along with him, graciously give us all things?
Sometimes I find it hard to entrust my life and plans into God’s hands, but this verse reminds me that God knows best and will graciously give me everything I need in this life—and the best decision I can make is to build my life on the foundation of that love, and trust Him to hold it firm.
2. He helps us to stay on the right path
The Lord directs the steps of the godly. He delights in every detail of their lives. Though they stumble, they will never fall, for the Lord holds them by the hand. – Psalm 37:23-24
I have lost count of the times I have stumbled and sinned, yet God has never given up on me; He is always there to help me recognise why I have stumbled, and pick me up so that I can learn from my mistakes and keep going.
It comforts and assures me to think of how the almighty God delights in every detail of our lives. We often have so many plans in our heads. so much so that the clutter box of our heads just keeps getting full, and then we get overwhelmed, and anxiety creeps in.
I plan because I want to control the outcome of my actions, so that I don’t lack anything, forgetting that there is someone who has already given me everything that I need in this life. Nothing comes by surprise to Him. He has got it fully under control.
I would be so lost if it weren’t for God directing me away from the plans that I had thought would be perfect but were actually wild and destructive; I am grateful to God for not allowing me to follow through with them, and I trust Him to direct me wherever He wants me to go. He knows best.
3. He works for us
No eye has seen a God besides you, who works for those who wait for him. – Isaiah 64:4
There are countless times in my life where the things I have prayed, cried, and hoped for all came true, mostly not when I wanted them, but when I needed them and when God saw it fit for me to have them.
Sometimes, I find myself in hard places and think that God is taking too long to get me out of there, forgetting that there’s a reason why I’m there and that God never, takes too long or too short to deliver us. His timing is perfect beyond comprehension.
You may be drowning in school or work life, looking for a job, trying to take care of so many things at once and feeling like God is just taking too long to lift those burdens off your shoulders.
He isn’t. He is working on you, through you, around you, and in your life, and asks that you stay faithful and patient. He will deliver what’s best for you—even if it may not be what you believe is best for yourself.
And that’s because . . .
4. He has a beautiful and perfect life waiting for us
No eye has seen, no ear has heard, and no mind has imagined what God has prepared for those who love Him. – 1 Corinthians 2:9
This life is messy, no lie there, but the life God has in store for us, back home—in Heaven—with Him, is nothing short of perfect. Imagine a life with no pain, no tears, no mourning (Revelation 21:4)—and one where we’ll be with God forever. Now that’s a life I can look forward to.
Throughout the pandemic, I have felt anxious and have witnessed others go through hardships and shared the pain of some. I’ve been through days that feel like I’m constantly fighting the enemy and failing; days of constantly stumbling and sinning, of feeling useless and discouraged.
Yet, I am reminded that these bad days are just temporary. But even as we go through them together with God, we know that these bad days are not for nothing, but will produce endurance that leads to hope (Romans 5:4). And as we allow God to work in us, He’ll slowly mould us to become more like Jesus (1 John 3:2).
These are just a few out of many reasons why Jesus is the best foundation for our lives. If you’re also tired of building your life on frail foundations, will you join me in putting our trust in the One who deserves it most?
Trust His love for you.
Trust His promises.
Trust His timing.
Trust His purpose.
Trust that He will never forsake you.
