The Day I Realized Not Every Dream Would Come True

Written By Sukma Sari Cornelius, originally in Bahasa Indonesia

Have you ever had wishes, desires, and dreams?
Have you ever written down the things you really want to achieve by a certain point in your life?
Have you ever found out that some dreams will never come true, and some wishes are simply impossible to reach?

I have.

I have many desires, many dreams. There was a period of time in my life when I diligently wrote down those dreams and desires. But one day, I found out that I just could not achieve my dreams by the targeted time. Anger and disappointment was all that I felt. I asked God why I failed to get what I desired. I knew that was not good, but I was just too full of disappointment. I was in a pretty bad condition.

Then one night before I slept, I read a post from a friend’s social media feed. It is from a hymn called “Trust His Heart.” It read:

God is too wise, to be mistaken
God is too good, to be unkind
So when you don’t understand, when you don’t see His plan
When you can’t trace His hand
Trust His Heart

Those words made me think through what I had experienced. Sure, I had many broken dreams, but I had forgotten some important facts. I forgot that there is one Person who always works behind the scene. I forgot that after I have been saved, my life is no longer mine; I am not the captain of my life. I forgot that while I may have pencil and paper, it is God who has the complete stationery set.

God spoke to me not just through the song, but also through His Word. He helped me understand clearly that it is Him who holds full control of my life. Jeremiah 29:11 says, “For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the LORD, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.”  I realized that my attitude was like a little child who demands his requests to be done and his prayers answered without any delay. I was not living as a servant who knows and trusts my Master as the one who holds full control of my life.

Friends, it is okay to have dreams and wishes. There is nothing wrong with that. But may we never forget that we have a Sovereign God who controls everything. We may hold the pencil and write every dream and desire we have, but remember that God has the eraser. Allow Him to erase what is not right, write His better plan on your paper, and watch how He works behind the scenes of our life. When you feel the circumstances around you are not working according to your wish, do not be afraid. God, our Creator, is and will continue to work and fulfill His plan in your life.

Thanks Sukma for sharing your experience. Actually, I have the same condition with you. God knows the master plan for our life. We only need to trust Him. Listen to His Word and He will give us strength. God bless you 😀
