The Death Destroyer

I have a confession to make: I love the TV show “Undercover Boss.” The premise of the show is that company bosses—disguised as ordinary employees—learn what their employees think of them and what the employees’ day-to-day lives are like. One reason I enjoy this show so much is seeing the disguises the bosses wear—some that appear to be laughably unconvincing. But what I appreciate most is how, through their experiences, the bosses come to understand both their employees and their companies more deeply, leading them to become far better leaders as a result.

Although it’s far from a perfect comparison, the experience of those bosses reminds me of what Jesus did in coming to earth. Philippians 2:6-7 tells us that even though Christ was God Himself, He became “a human being”—an act that theologians call the incarnation. And part of the reason He became a human is revealed in Hebrews. There we read that through Jesus’ incarnation, He was able to relate to us fully and has chosen to call those who believe in Him His “brothers and sisters” (Hebrews 2:11). That in itself is incredibly encouraging!

But the blessing of the incarnation goes even further than that: Christ wasn’t just born as a human, He died as one as well—and then rose again! And through the resurrection, He demonstrated His power over sin and death (Hebrews 2:14-15). So through God coming in the flesh, His crucifixion, and His resurrection, death and the power of the devil have been shattered!

It’s easy to forget, but because of the sacrifice of Christ, we no longer need to fear anything—even death itself. Here’s the reality: Because the Death Destroyer is for us, who can be against us? (Romans 8:31).
