Anxiety weighs down the heart, but a kind word cheers it up. (Proverbs 12:25)

The words of the reckless pierce like swords, but the tongue of the wise brings healing. (Proverbs 12:18)

When we’re anxious, sometimes all we want is a listening ear and an encouraging word. And not one of those “Think positive” or “It’ll all be okay so stop worrying”. But perhaps more of “you are not alone”, or “take it one day, one step at a time.”

But in our search for empathy, people may fail us. Their rushed attemps to soothe our worries and hurts can end up wounding us and make us retreat into our shells.

Which is why we need to know whom to confide in–the wise. People who plumb the depths of God’s Word for themselves, who understand and seek to learn the compassion of God, who humbly and prayerfully ask the Spirit for wisdom, so they can say the right words at the right time.

What about you? Are you seeking to be such a person for others as well? Are you learning to listen with compassion? Are you asking God for wisdom in how you respond to others’ sorrows?
