ODJ: A Special Place

November 12, 2017

READ: Revelation 21:1-7

God’s home is now among his people! He will live with them, and they will be his people (v.3).

In a 2016 Washington Post article, Harvard-Smithsonian Center astrophysicist Howard A. Smith wrote that “the universe, far from being a collection of random accidents, appears to be stupendously perfect and fine-tuned for life”. Smith went on to describe the unique ways Earth is designed—that it doesn’t seem to be simply a random little planet as some would believe.

Smith’s comments echo the way the Scriptures celebrate the special qualities of Earth. Our Creator has made an amazing place for us to dwell in and steward (Genesis 1:28, 2:15). As we care for and enjoy what God’s given us, we enjoy a foretaste of what’s to come—the fully renewed and restored creation promised in Revelation 21:1.

The apostle John’s vision from God revealed “a new heaven and a new earth, for the old heaven and the old earth had disappeared” (Revelation 21:1). When Jesus returns and makes “everything new”, Earth will be marked by life, peace and joy (vv.4-5). It will be even more special than the version we enjoy today. What will truly stand out is that “God’s home [will now be] among his people! He will live with them” (v.3).

What an amazing day that will be! Not only will we enjoy Eden-like beauty and natural perfection, but God Himself will be with us face-to-face. When life hurts, may we focus on our Creator and our amazing future with Him. There will be a day when we “inherit all these blessings” (v.7).

While we wait to be with Jesus, may we continue to be grateful for the beautiful, special place He’s provided. And may we care for it as good stewards while we reflect God’s new creational ways in our relationships with others. That will make this very special place even more special!
