Who Shields Us?

Written By Calvin Woo

Recently, I felt God’s calling do something for the society. As a university student, it crossed my mind to venture into social entrepreneurship, and to incorporate Christian principles and values into my business.

But while I was enthusiastic about the idea, the responses I received when I communicated my plans with others were mostly negative. Those I spoke to commented that it is imprudent for a student to venture into a social enterprise as it is risky business and might jeopardize my future. Furthermore my desire to incorporate Christian values into operating this business was deemed untenable and unrealistic.

I was perturbed by those words. Down and uncertain of the next step to take, I locked myself in the room and cried out to Lord, “What do you want me to do, Lord? Show me your way!”

The Lord spoke to me from Psalm 3:3 which says, “But you, O Lord, are a shield about me, my glory, and the lifter of my head.” That verse gave me comfort that God is my shield and I need not be afraid. If we are doing the things that God has called us to do, our responsibility is to just do it and let God direct it. With that assurance, I got out from my  state of dejection with a new sense of purpose.

I discovered that setbacks, disappointments, and uncertainties can strengthen our faith in Him even more. Trust in Him. He is our shield.

EDITOR’S NOTE:  It is prudent to prayerfully assess our options based on biblical principles and consulting with godly advisors. After applying due diligence and wisdom, we can boldly step out in faith and go where God leads. Proverbs 3:5-6 is our assurance.
