6 Things I Want

Written By Zarah Parsaso

There are basic necessities in this world that we need in order to survive such as food, clothing, and shelter. But over and above our primary needs, most of us have an ongoing desire for material things. I am no different from the ordinary girl. Currently, these are the six things I really want:

1. Laptop
I want to have my own laptop because I like to write. For me, writing is my way of relieving stress and boredom. It helps me express my thoughts. Besides, I’m an engineering student and most of my projects require the use of a computer. While I do have a desktop computer at home that I share with my sisters, having my own laptop will definitely be more convenient and enable me to finish my assignments on time.

2. Dresses and Shoes
While my sister and I don’t fit the height requirements of a professional model, we enjoy dressing up and having our own “photo shoots” at home.

3. Polaroid Instant Camera
I learned about the Polaroid Instant Camera while watching a television program. When the celebrity guest pressed the shutter button, I was surprised that the picture came out instantly. I love taking pictures, so being able to have a physical keepsake is nice.

4. Vacation
I love traveling. However the farthest place I’ve been to is Pangasinan and Baguio City in the Philippines. Although I was born in Pangasinan, we moved to Batangas when I was four or five years old. I dream of visiting different countries around the world such as the United States of America, Korea, Singapore, Thailand, Dubai, and some European countries. In fact, when I was little (I am still “little” in size—i am almost five feet), I wanted to be a flight stewardess because I wanted to travel the whole world.

5. Scrapbook Materials
I like to make things just to keep myself busy. Currently, I love doing scrapbooking, making cards, and basically anything related to arts.

6. Birthday Celebration
Next year, I will be turning 18 and I would like to have a floral-themed celebration for my birthday party.

So as you can see, I have many wants and my list goes on and on. To be honest, at this stage of my life (I am still in my second year in college), I can definitely survive without the list of items mentioned. We should seek God and pray for the knowledge to distinguish between the things we really need versus the things we simply want.

As a student, I get my daily allowance from my parents. They work hard to supply my needs, pay water and electricity bills and my school tuition fees. They sacrifice their needs and wants in order to provide me with the things I have now. So what should I be doing? I should be grateful and help my parents out by learning to use my allowance wisely and learning to save money.

We read in Psalm 37:4 these encouraging words: “Delight yourself in the Lord; and He will give you the desires of your heart.” By desiring God above all things, He will surpass all the other wants in our lives.
