Although my heart is for the overlooked and voiceless, I knew that no amount of ministry with and among them would enable me to experience what being on the margins, or “othered”, is like. It’s scary to be a Christian in today’s workplace. If anyone finds out that we’re a Christian, there’s a good chance they will automatically assume we are haters, bigots, and racists. We will have awkward conversations defending our views on religion. So it’s natural that we want to  stay quiet, never let anyone know that we’re a Christian, and avoid any talk about Jesus.

When I was growing up, I remember asking an adult “Why don’t you believe in God?” Her response stunned me: “If God was real, I wouldn’t have had seven miscarriages in a row.” Whether we go through cancer, lose a loved one, experience mental ill-health, or even just turn on the news, suffering is a universal experience. And it evokes within each of us a question that we rally at the God who claims Himself to be both powerful and good: How can God allow it?

I was crushed when allegations against the late apologist, Ravi Zacharias, emerged, and I read about how RZIM initially refused to believe the women who accused Zacharias of sexually assaulting them. As a victim of sexual assault, I grieved for the helplessness they would have felt.
