Hercules

Written by Calvin Woo
The recent blockbuster movie Hercules starring Dwayne Johnson follows a different storyline from Disney’s version. The Hercules we are introduced to at the start is a mercenary. His reputation as half-god and half-mortal is only legend up to this point. With his astonishing strength and legendary reputation, he fought in battles, but only if he was rewarded in gold. This included a corrupt nation where many lives were sacrificed in the process. His comrades reminded him that he is the son of Zeus and not merely a legend. Finally, by embracing his real identity, he rebelled against the nation’s leader, built another nation and fought with pride.

Hercules’ story draws a parallel to us as Christians. Just as Hercules needs to embrace his identity as the son of Zeus, as Christians, we need to live out our identity as children of God too.

“For in Christ Jesus you are all sons of God, through faith. For as many of you as were baptized into Christ have put on Christ. There is neither Jew nor Greek, there is neither slave nor free, there is no male and female, for you are all one in Christ Jesus.” —Galatians 3:22-26 (ESV)

Jesus does not differentiate us by our race, occupation, gender but loves us all as His children. Slow down your pace, remember that He is with us, and let’s make a difference in our world by doing the things that God has set forth for us.
