The first prequel to Pixar film Monsters University reads like your typical college-themed movie—a story about an unlikely pair of friends who form the college underdogs’ team—except that this time round, we have lots of fabric dye and fantastic comedy thrown into the mix.
Mike and Sulley (voiced by the fabulous Billy Crystal and John Goodman respectively) are as different as chalk and cheese. Mike, a dauntless bookworm, whose only ambition in life is to be a scarer, resents the privileged blue-furred Sulley, who buoyed by his family name and natural talent, seems to be going places despite his nonchalant attitude. The common trait between them—fierce competitiveness—gets both of them kicked out of the prestigious scare program. Now, this unlikely duo finds in each other the unlikeliest of friendships as they team up with other less-than-scary monsters to earn their way back into the program. And so, we watch these rivals’ less-than-pleasant journey towards friendship and self-discovery with each other’s help.
Proverbs 27:17 says “As iron sharpens iron, so one person sharpens another” (NIV). Despite being poles apart, those of us who have watched the first installment Monsters Inc. would know that Mike and Sulley went on to succeed in their careers as scarers.
May we, like Mike and Sulley, seek to embrace healthy competition and spur one another on to reach our fullest potential!
