Why Rape?

On December 20, 2012, I read the news of a brutal and disgusting gang rape of a 23-year-old lady that took place in New Delhi, India. According to the news, the lady boarded a bus with a male friend at night after catching a movie and 6 men onboard the moving bus gang raped her. She was assaulted with an iron rod and suffered grievous injuries to her internal organs. She subsequently died from organ failure two weeks later.

My first thought after reading this was, What is this world coming to? As we begin a new year, our hearts are filled with hope and excitement for a fresh start that a new year promises. However, such news only serves to reinforce the fact that not all of us have the luxury of thinking and feeling this way.

According to the National Crime Records Bureau of India, one woman is raped every 20 minutes across the country. In 2010, 24,206 rapes were reported with countless more cases gone unreported. It seriously baffles me why life has to be like this for the women in India.

In the course of my dismay and sheer disgust at the news, I was reminded that God is sovereign and that He knows what is happening. I do not have the answers as to why this has happened but I know that I can place my trust and hope in an unfailing God who never disappoints. He listens to our prayers and I know that in His arms, we can all find rest and comfort. If we earnestly seek Him, He hears our cry and will not abandon us. He will bring us through our trials and on the day of His coming, He will wipe every tear from our eyes (Revelation 21:4).

Whenever you need Him, whenever you call,
The Lord is close by—He’s the One who hears all;
When you are in trouble, when you need His aid,
Just cry out to Jesus, and your fears will fade. —Fitzhugh

    was baffled by the news as well. Sadly the world is coming to such atrocities. And yes God will hear our prayers and may we wait earnestly for His coming.
