Selfish desires come from the sinful nature in us and are often motivated by envy, hatred, greed or lust.
Galatians 5:17 For the flesh desires what is contrary to the Spirit, and the Spirit what is contrary to the flesh. They are in conflict with each other, so that you are not to do whatever you want.
Our selfish desires often prevent us from serving effectively as well as loving and giving freely. Getting rid of selfish desires gives way for God to work in us and through us, drawing us closer to Him.

It’s like all of us have this innate yearning for our needs to be recognised and met but no one wants to do this. Selfishness causes us to focus on ourselves and forget about everything else, which would definitely poison our relationship with God and with people around us. Our selfishness often stops us from caring about others and God cannot work through us because we just focus on ourselves.
